What is a Medical Assistant?

Also known as: Medical Secretary, Medical Office Specialist, Medical Receptionist. 

A medical secretary is a member of staff in health care facilities like hospitals and doctors’ offices who performs administrative and supportive functions. In addition to having administrative skills, medical secretaries should have knowledge of medical terminology and be familiar with various medical procedures and business practices.

Medical Secretaries perform secretarial duties using specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. Duties may include scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence.

Course Overview 

This program provides highly technical training necessary for a competent medical assistant/secretary.  It provides educational opportunities for those interested in working as a medical secretary in single or multi-physician practices or large healthcare and allied health organizations. In addition to administrative skills, medical secretary students receive specialized training in medical terminology, medical administration & procedures and word processing.

Aims & Objectives

The course covers all the relevant terminology and documentation, and familiarises you with the responsibilities, practice and structure of hospital medical departments and medical practices. Through a series of self-paced, comprehensive lessons you’ll work through each medical specialism and learn the terminology frequently used within each area. You’ll learn how the words are formed and become so familiar with it that it becomes second nature to you.
